A day trip to St Albans and the Roman city of Verulamium with Cathedral City Guide

Yesterday Sarah and I took a trip to the Hertfordshire cathedral city of St Albans and the nearby Roman ruins of Verulamium.

The perceptive among you may have noticed that St Albans isn’t one of the cities listed here on Cathedral City Guide or marked on our map. St Albans’ Abbey Church, despite being the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain, was only made a cathedral in 1877.

Fans of the medieval period or English cathedral cities will probably enjoy the TV adaptation of World Without End, currently being shown in the UK on Channel 4.

The series, based on a historical novel by Welsh author Ken Follett, is set in the fictional English cathedral city of Kingsbridge. It follows the lives of ordinary citizens against the backdrop of the start of the Hundred Years’ War with France.

World Without End has a star-studded cast including Miranda Richardson, Ben Chaplin, and Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon (here playing a villainous Englishwoman called Petranilla). Less well known names giving standout performances include Oliver Jackson-Cohen (pictured) and Tom Weston-Jones as brothers Ralph and Merthin.
